The scriptures read are Deuteronomy 10-12, Psalm 56, and Luke 14.
Deuteronomy 10. Moses is still recounting the events of the last 4 books. Thrown in are some ethical demands, like treat foreigners well.
Deuteronomy 11. Moses tells the people that they are the last witnesses to the whole exodus and wilderness wandering. Their parents are all dead and their children are too young to remember all the wonders. He also introduces the theme of blessing and cursing.
Deuteronomy 12. More rules about offerings and sacrifices. And a central shrine in the promised land is anticipated. Lots of repetition, especially to emphasize the "no eating blood" rule. (This BTW is why Jehovah's Witnesses don't accept blood transfusions.)
Psalm 56. "In God I trust; I am not afraid; what can man do to me?" Confidence in God in the midst of enemies.
Luke 14. Jesus on table etiquette and whom you should invite to your banquet--those who can't repay you.
Before you decide to do anything, count the cost. Especially when it comes to taking up your cross and following Jesus.
